Walk the Southern Ridge

View From Mount Faber

From Mount Faber to West Coast Park, the Southern Ridge span across a total length of 9km each seamlessly linked by foot trail and connection bridge. Whether you are a stressful office worker seeking for a fresh breath of air amidst the lust nature or someone who brings your spouse for a leisurely stroll to enjoy the rich greenery of the park, it has plenty to offer.

Starting from Mount Faber which is conveniently located at Harbourfront station, the journey to the South begin from climbing the steep hill and stairs. Upon reaching the top, take a break from the tedious steps and enjoy the panoramic view of the harbour, Sentosa and the other island.

Up the hill and down the slope to proceed to the next destination which is the main highlight of the ridge, Henderson Wave. The snake-like structure bridge that sits across Henderson Road connects Mount Faber Park and Telok Blangah Hill Park, is the highest pedestrian bridge in our island. Along the bridge there are platforms built to rest your butt shall you experienced giddiness due to the height, however the shelter above does not shield you from the rain and shine.

Cross the bridge over to the Telok Blangah Hill park through the Hilltop walk to bring you into another forest experience. Travel further to be greeted by a series of metal walkways that spread out like a leaf shape. Visitors can take a shortcut via the stairs or walk down the zig zag linkways to prolong the walk. However the shortcut was guarded by mischievous monkeys who doesn't seem to be friendly and i assume the only way to get past him is to offer him bananas. If i'm with my buddies things might have gone differently, brute force will be the solution.

At the end of the 2km metal walkway lies another bridge called the Alexandra Arch. The bridge design was inspired by the leaf, lights up beautifully during the night to offer motorist and pedestrian an unique eye candy. Try driving past the road in the night to catch the bridge illuminating into multiple shades of colour, like something you would see at ECP overlooking the Singapore Flyer.

Last but not least the final destination of the day at Alexandra, Hort Park. It is a new garden hub setup recently to promote the learning of agriculture as well as ideas for home gardening. Aimed to be a high-tech lifestyle hub, the objective is to generate interest among the community especially the young crowd to be involved in greenery project instead of staying home playing computer games. Good habit cultivates from young, i do hope that the future generation would be more environmental-aware to do their part in saving the earth. Gardening seems to be an interesting culture hobby but i do not stay in a private property so there isn't any land for me to play with, too bad.

Hort Park is not the end of the 9km journey, there is still Kent Ridge Park and West Coast Park beyond but we do not intend to explore further because both of us have been there before. You can read up my Kent Ridge Park Aka 99 bend in the February archive and for West Coast Park, can say it's a big playground and a 24hrs Mac cafe there.

Thanks wanlin for the wonderful photographs, heh .
